Who are the villains of Spider-Man 3?
Posted on Wed, 23-Mar-2005

The villains for "Spider-Man 3" will be Venom and Man-Wolf, at least
according to a report on the PressConnects.com website.

I do know that Venom is supposed to be a part of the next movie, and since
Daniel Gillies is coming back to play John Jameson/Man-Wolf (he told me he's
returning for sure), I guess it's safe to say that Thomas Haden Church, who
they announced yesterday for a role, will be suiting up to play Venom. So
everything in the article seems to be on the money.

Special-effects worker Tim Phoenix, who worked on Doc Ock for "Spider-Man
2", has been hired to work on both Venom and Man-Wolf for the next sequel.
"It's super cool stuff and I am in my element here for these particular
creations," he tells the abovementioned site. "I am living in 'the dream'
out here. It is just so surreal."

"Spider-Man 3" swings into theatres in 2007.

I won't believe a word until I hear it from it from either Raimi or
Sony themselves.

I love THC (y. Thomas Hayden Church) but he's 20 years too old.

I do know that Venom is supposed to be a part of the next movie,
No Gwen Stacey
No Vulture (For God's sake he was Spidey's 1st villain)
No Kingpin (So Daredevil had him, he was also pivotal in TASM series)
No Mysterio (n.Rey)
No Hobgoblin
No Black Cat (One of my personal favs)

Man-Wolf's alright, but adding Venom to the series this early =
Jumping the Shark.

Depends what you mean by "early". Raimi mentioned in an interview for
Spiderman 2 that Spidey3 might be the last Spidey film with this cast
and continuity, as there was pressure from Sony's brass to wrap up the
series. If you were hoping for a leisurely tour of Spidey's rogue
gallery, it doesn't look like it's going to happen. If this is going
to be the last movie (of this series anyways), then this is it. You
jump the shark now, or never.

Wouldn't "never" be a much better option?

I can't know the motivations of Sony execs, but in the interview,
Raimi didn't actually say that there weren't going to be anymore
movies and when I mentioned the interview comment, I didn't say that
he did.

He just said that Spidey3 might be the last one he was involved with.
The contracts with the current Spiderman cast and presumably Raimi
too, will run out with Spidey3, and require renegotiation. He also
mentioned that the Sony brass were pressuring him to wrap up the
Spiderman series, but didn't mention whether these were related
issues. That's about the extent of it. He never mentioned the
motivations of the studio execs on that.

If I had to guess, the execs might be looking to reboot the Spiderman
franchise with a new (cheaper) cast, and maybe another director.
Pushing him to wrap it up would give Sony a bit more flexibility in
how to proceed with the Spiderman projects.

They could stop right there (as there's already an ending and a sense
of closure). No worries about pissing off fans by ending on an
unresolved cliff hanger.

They could continue on (start a second trilogy, with a continuity
shared by the first).

They could also just reboot the Spiderman franchise, hire a new
director, a whole new (and cheaper) cast, and a new deal with Marvel
(which I guess they'd have to negotiate eventually unless they buy out
Marvel outright). Start fresh, no ties to the original.

Of course, this is pure speculation based on something like 3 lines of
dialog in an old magazine interview -- wish I could remember which
one. For all I know, some guy involved with the Spiderman projects
might have pissed off a big wig at Sony Pictures by sleeping with the
guy's wife or something.

One other possibility comes to my mind. The only two comic-based movie
series to go beyond the second film so far are the Superman and Batman
series, both of which ended up disappointing fans before Warners and DC
mercifully ended them. Sony and Marvel have already enjoyed success
with two Spiderman movies (and two X-men features), while the Hulk,
Daredevil and Elektra movies were somewhat disappointing and apparently
won't spawn sequels. Maybe Sony thinks the genre is losing its appeal,
or maybe they just don't want to push their luck too far -- finish and
release the third Spiderman movie, let that series end, and wait to see
if there's a demand for more.

If the audience wants more Spiderman, I'm sure Sony ... or someone ...
will be happy to find new people to make them. Whether different actors
could win over the audience as well as the current cast has, I just
don't know; except for Kirsten Dunst (who is beautiful, but still pales
compared with Romita's MJ), every actor in the current cast looks, acts
and sounds just the way I imagined them back in the '60s.

The references to Venom and Man-Wolf were inserted by the author of the
report, not stated by the SFX artist being interviewed. In other words, it
was not a spoiler, as it was not provably true.

Anyway, for me Church is a perfect choose for playing Wolfman.
I don't remember seeing Gloria in movies.
