Despite getting more of a battering than a piece of fat flake, FOX's so-so
superhero film "Fantastic Four" has surpassed expectations - opening at
Number 1 at the box office and raking in a reasonably impressive $56 million
at the box office since it's release last week.

Surprisingly - considering the bashing it's had since it went into
production - the film version of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's comic series is
the fourth biggest opener ever for a Marvel movie, after the two
"Spider-Man" films and "X-Men 2".

Avi Arad, chairman of Marvel and all-round studio spruiker, tells The Los
Angeles Times that because of the numbers - the sequel is a sure-thing now.
"Of Course there will be a sequel", he tells the paper. "Now the
constituency is much larger".

FOX's Bruce Snyder and Hutch Parker suggested it was the film's "fun" factor
that fueled interest. "You've had a series of pretty dark films, and the
audience was starved for a good time," Parker said, adding that "part of the
reason this has been such a big deal for Marvel is that it has taken 10
years for us and more like 20 for Avi and Marvel" to get the movie into
theaters.

All the cast are signed for a sequel. It's been mooted that the wicked
'Puppet Master' will be introduced in the next round.

No offense, but I'll believe it when there's an official announcement
from Fox. Too much is unknown at this point and to assume or believe
reports of a sequel based on a weekend's boxoffice makes no sense.
The unthinkable could happen and FF could face a 70% dropoff this
weekend.

Personally I cannot wait to see this film, I like the FF and the
trailers looked good so I will be there on opening night.

Yep South Africa. For some reason we are getting it quite late,
around August sometime. Very strange decision, given that we usually
get big films around the same time as the Americans and we are in the
middle of mid-year school holidays.

Sorry to hear that. I won't spoil a thing for you, except that it's not as
bad as the critics say.

From Jo'berg? I used to know a few fellas from there from youth hosteling
years ago. The cousins DeToit, I think. Popular name in South Africa?

Very popular Afrikaans surname. Yep and I am from Jo'Burg, don't
believe what people tell you Jo"burg is the cool city not Cape Town.

Oh yeah and I was wrong about FF opening in August, it opened last
Friday, kinda snuck up on me. Only saw the ads after I had booked for
War of the Worlds so am hoping to catch FF this weekend.

As I said before, this franchise CAN be fixed. I can't wait to see more
adventures of the Thing, the Human Torch and Jessica Alba's body.

Better idea than getting involved with Doom again, at least until they
figure him out.

Why does Avi Arad hate Galactus and the Mole Men?

I assumed Galactus is being saved for the rumored Silver Surfer movie.
