Adjust that eye-patch, grab that shield, get your bow and gaze into the Eye
of Agamotto to see what Marvel is up to!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with an update, thanks to the Hollywood Reporter,
of the subjects of the future Marvel movies. Some interesting choices
here... CLOAK & DAGGER? Visually they'd be a great team to see in live
action, but can they carry their own movie? DR. STRANGE has to be handled
carefully. I love the character, but to pull off Dr. Strange outside of a
comic book without being laughable will be a big challenge. If done right,
it could be fantastic. The one I'm most excited about is THE AVENGERS!
Anyway, read below for the Hollywood Reporter story!!!
The home to such superheroes as Spider-Man and The Hulk has tweaked its name
and raised the $525 million it needs to become a producer of movies based on
some of its 5,000 characters. Marvel Entertainment -- previously Marvel
Enterprises -- is set to announce Tuesday its name change and completion of
its loan package, and also will divulge that superheroes Captain America,
the Avengers, Nick Fury, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Cloak & Dagger, Dr.
Strange, Hawkeye, Power Pack and Shang-Chi will get the feature-film
treatment. Paramount Pictures, under a deal announced in April shortly after
Brad Grey took the helm of the studio, will distribute and market the films,
the first of which will be released in 2008 or possibly sooner.

"Are you kidding, brother? I love (the wrestling.) It's in my blood,
brother. It's also in my knee, brother. In my hip, brother. But I just can't
seem to shake it. If I shake too hard, brother, it's gonna be in my back. Do
you know what I mean, brother?.I got news for you, Larry brother. It's not
hold old you are, it's how old you fell, brother. And I feel 157, brother."

A severely pared-down version number-of-people-wise I'm sure.

Didn't Marvel give this kind of treatment to that waste of everthing
(the movie version at least), "Man-Thing"?

Cloak & Dagger
Geez, why?
Easy to explain their origin "Runaways, evil drug dealers, bizarre reaction,
drugs screwed us up", instant motivation too "Stop drug dealers before they
ruin more lives".. Fab visuals; Guy of living shadow with swirly cape twn
years before Spawn, and attractive acrobatic female who shoots bolts of
light... What's not to like?

Actually, I'm not surprised that lesser known characters like this are
getting movies due to the success of the Blade movies. You can take a
concept like Cloak & Dagger and have a whole lot more freedom with it
than you would with a major fan favorite like Avengers. Incidentally,
the prospect of an Avengers movie worries me because, despite modern
special effects and inflated budgets, I just don't see how you could
do justice to a large team of established characters. It would likely
end up like the X-Men movies with one character taking center stage
(probably with Captain America taking Wolverine's role) and the others
getting left with glorified cameos...or worse, they'll make a movie of
the current incarnation of the Avengers and we'll get yet another
Wolverine love-fest.

That's pretty much how movies work. A main hero, a main villian, and support
cast. That's why only one person survives the horror flicks. It's the same
thing with TV shows, though they only wind up with one episode, not the
whole series.

As for who's on the Avengers... umm... who isn't? It's not like they
couldn't put Spider-Man in a similar position as well. Or Hulk. Though the
Avengers might be a reference to the cartoon.

It pretty much has to be a TV cartoon. Sony/Columbia isn't going to play
footsie with Paramount, nor are any of the other production companies that
have the film rights tied up to individual properties either. Alien vs
Predator wasn't an option until the franchises had run dry on both ends.
Same with Jason vs Freddy.
An Avengers film will only have second stringers, especially considering
they want to make a Captain America film independently. Iron Man is still
tied up (I guess Tom Cruise has passed, but it is probably the mustache), so
is Namor, and definately the Hulk. Wolverine is completely lost, as Hugh is
planning on making a solo film after taking the reins as one of the
producers of X3 as a negotiating point. It doesn't sound like he wants to be
part of an ensemble anymore.
There are a lot of contract layers that I don't think the fanboys are
seeing.

You might be seeing a few too many. Remember, they can start filming the
movie at any time, but only release it after each contract for the
characters release it. That basically rules out Wolverine and Spider-Man
(both of whom would probably do more to damage the story than help it, so no
loss.) Others... maybe, maybe not. If the movie company has it Optioned, but
refuses to use it, Marvel has methods of taking it back. (Remember
Activision vs Paramount over devaluing a franchise?)

But again, the 'Avengers' are pretty much every hero in the MU except some
of the X-Men. (And remember, Angel and Beast were on both.)

Plus it shows a positive on interracial relations....

From what I recall, Cloak doesn't talk much. But I can see him becoming a
moral philosopher-type. Someone who speaks very little, but when he does
speaks with much impact.
